Oxidizers

The most state of the art, currently available electrode with the highest overvoltage potential concerning oxygen development in aqueous solutions is the boron-doped diamond electrode, with a standard potential of 2.85 volts. The technical properties of high overvoltage cause the production of a relevant amount of hydroxyl radicals (OH-radicals). Hydroxyl radicals are very reactive and therefore highly desired for aerobic processes. At the same time, OH-radicals are a basis material for the production of additional oxidizers directly on the diamond electrode.

The diamond electrolyte treated electrolyte, e.g. water or waste-water, possesses a mix of oxidizers. For example, when diamond electrodes are used for electrolysis of water, OH-radicals (OH•), ozone (O3), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) etc. develop in addition to chlorine (Cl) when salt (NaCl) is contained in the water. In the end, the oxidizers produced by electrolysis are determined by the electrolyte and its contents.
